Woofstock at the Winery with Emmylou Harris & Tom Rush
Emmylou Harris is one of the most decorated and enduring figures in American music. Fourteen Grammy Awards, a Billboard Century Award, induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame, and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018 together tell part of the story. The fuller version is in the records themselves: more than 25 albums, 15 million copies sold, and collaborations spanning Bob Dylan, Gram Parsons, Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson, Linda Ronstadt, Neil Young, and Johnny Cash, among many others. Her songwriting has always carried the weight of earned observation, and her voice remains one of the most immediately recognizable in folk and country.
This evening is also something more than a concert. It is part of Woofstock at the Winery, a benefit supporting Bonaparte's Retreat, the dog rescue nonprofit Harris founded in 2004 to save shelter animals in and around Nashville. Music with purpose is its own kind of pleasure.
Tom Rush has been shaping the American folk tradition since the early 1960s, when he held a weekly residency at Boston's Club 47 while still a Harvard student. His guitar work is precise and expressive, his storytelling both warm and wry, and his influence on the generations that followed is well documented. James Taylor has named him as a primary influence. Garth Brooks has placed him in his top five. His early recordings introduced the world to Joni Mitchell, Jackson Browne, and James Taylor before any of them were household names.
