Uncrowned: A Tribute to Ida Cox
City Winery Boston presents(opens in a new tab) Uncrowned: A Tribute to Ida Cox feat. Gina Coleman live on October 30th at 7:30pm.
Gina Coleman’s New England Album Release Concert of “Uncrowned: A Tribute To Ida Cox.”
Ida Cox, the "Uncrowned Queen of the Blues, was a 1920s powerhouse who defied the era's norms. A prolific composer and savvy businesswoman, she wrote her own hits and recorded over 78 titles for Paramount Records, cementing her legacy as a foundational architect of the genre. Nearly a century later, Gina Coleman-founder and leader of the band Misty Blues-discovered a mirror of her own life in Ida's story.
With over 100 original songs and 27 years of band management under her belt, Gina felt a profound connection to Ida's independent spirit while researching her Queens of the Blues podcast.
"Uncrowned: A Tribute to Ida Cox" is the first full-length album dedicated entirely to Ida's catalog. It is a soulful bridge across generations, pairing Ida's pioneering lyrical artistry with Gina’s modern, unique musical interpretations. More than a tribute, "Uncrowned" is a masterclass in the enduring power of the female blues songwriter.
Gina Coleman
Hailing from the South Bronx and rooted in Western Massachusetts, singer/songwriter Gina Coleman is the powerhouse lead vocalist and founder of the award-winning ensemble Misty Blues, which she formed in 1999 after actor Ruben Santiago-Hudson heard her performing gospel in a stage production and urged her to pursue classic blues. Over more than two decades, Coleman has emerged as a vital voice in contemporary blues, seamlessly blending traditional Delta and Chicago influences with elements of funk, soul, jazz, and tent-revival gospel while writing deeply personal songs about resilience, identity, and empowerment. Beyond fronting Misty Blues through 18 studio albums, touring internationally, and reaching the finals of the International Blues Challenge, she maintains an active solo career playing cigar-box guitar, and preserving the rich heritage of Black American music.
