The Passover Project
In early 2024, St. Louis Jewish Light Editor-in-Chief Ellen Futterman enlisted Brothers Lazaroff to help produce a music-filled alternative seder. Rooted in a few examples from other creative communities around the country, Ellen wanted to create an experiential Passover seder that both brought the community together and highlighted some of St. Louis' abundant talent. Attendees will enjoy a family-friendly, but decidedly grown-up seder, with music, poetry, grooves, and some hidden mystical teachings connected throughout.
Some non-kosher seder dishes fashioned by City Winery’s culinary team will be featured for purchase, along with the traditional four glasses of wine offered as a special wine flight (or glasses may be purchased separately).
Brothers Lazaroff: Led by brothers David and Jeff Lazaroff, Brothers Lazaroff is at once a St. Louis–based songwriting and producing team and a six- to fifteen-piece ensemble. They have made a habit of effortlessly blending genres around their rooted songwriting, while also developing multiple long-running events that bring music and community together. Brothers Lazaroff has released over a dozen original albums, EPs, and live recordings. These songs and events have become the foundation for an ever-growing family of multidisciplinary artists.
Anita Jackson: Anita Jackson is a St. Louis native who has traveled nationally and internationally in theater productions, concerts, and workshops. She has recorded and performed as a background vocalist for numerous artists, including Bette Midler on the Grammy Award–winning song “From a Distance,” as well as Patti Austin, Mariah Carey, and many others. Anita has also been a featured performer with the St. Louis Black Repertory Theatre and will soon release her first solo jazz album, Life Is Beautiful, honoring loved ones lost during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Rabbi Daniel Bogard: Rabbi Daniel Bogard serves as a rabbi at Central Reform Congregation in St. Louis, where he focuses on ritual life, teaching, and community engagement. Known for his warmth, musicality, and accessibility, Rabbi Bogard brings a contemporary spiritual voice to Jewish tradition, weaving text, story, and song into meaningful communal experiences. His presence helps anchor this seder in both tradition and creativity.
David Goldenberg: David Goldenberg is a St. Louis–based musician and producer whose work bridges Jewish music, jazz, rock, and improvisational traditions. A longtime collaborator with Brothers Lazaroff and a central figure in many of CRC’s most innovative musical offerings, Goldenberg brings a deep sensitivity to ensemble playing, texture, and groove. His work emphasizes music as a vehicle for connection, ritual, and shared experience.
Rob Koritz: Rob Koritz was classically trained at the University of Arizona and earned a degree in Jazz Studies at Webster University in his hometown of St. Louis. Since 1999, Rob has been the drummer for Dark Star Orchestra, helping to keep the music and live concert experience of the Grateful Dead alive for more than 25 years. He also founded the “Percussion Discussion,” a team-building workshop centered on drumming, and in 2021 launched The Music Plays the Band podcast, featuring conversations with major figures in the jam band world and beyond.
Joey Ferber: Joey Ferber is a guitarist and singer-songwriter whose musical styles merge like the meeting of rivers just north of his home city of St. Louis. Born into a musical family, Ferber gravitated toward music early as both a listener and a player. In addition to his solo work, he performs with the future funk and avant-garde ensemble Blvck Spvde & the Cosmos. He is currently working on a new album with his group Joe2Morrow, a collaboration with his childhood friend Zack Morrow of Kansas City, blending shared roots, long-standing musical rapport, and a forward-looking creative vision.
Michael Tzinberg: Michael Tzinberg is a musician and early childhood Jewish educator from St. Louis, Missouri. He plays old-time, blues, early country, and other traditional music. Originally a drummer, Michael now plays fiddle, banjo, guitar, and mandolin. He is one half of the old-time/science-fiction band Wild Mountain Thyme Machine.
