Ruthie Foster
Ruthie Foster's first Grammy win, Best Contemporary Blues Album for Mileage, arrived after more than three decades of hustling to make a life in music possible. It's the kind of recognition that means something precisely because of how long the road was. Foster signed to a major label after completing her tour of duty in the US Navy, then stepped away from music entirely in 1993 to care for her mother, rebuilding her career as an independent artist only after her mother's passing.
That rebuilding started small. "I wrote this thing on a sticky note and it just said 'Just say yes,'" Foster recalls, a note to self that carried her back to the stage and now lends its name to her new album, Just Say Yes, out August 28 via Sun Records. She made the record in Nashville with her Mileage collaborators Tyler Bryant and Rebecca Lovell of Larkin Poe, joined this time by Megan Lovell and Mike Seal."
Every last one of these songs are about some aspect of my life," Foster explains. "This was my way of being true to who I am and knowing that I'm in yet another transition in my life, which is how these albums tend to happen."
Few voices in blues carry this much lived experience. Foster's music is proof that the long way around is sometimes the only way that means anything.
