Paul Shapiro's Ribs & Brisket Brunch
City Winery NYC presents Paul Shapiro's Ribs & Brisket Brunch live on Saturday, February 14th, at 12:30 PM
Paul Shapiro’s Ribs & Brisket Plays for Lovers on Valentine’s Day, Saturday February 14th. It’s doors at 11am and performance at 12:30 so come hungry and enjoy City Winery’s delicious brunch menu. We’re delighted to have Edwin Lugo Walker with us along with Ribs mainstay the mellifluous Cilla Owens. The rhythm section of Jerry Korman, Dave Hofstra and Tony Lewis cooks like crazy. Eleanor Reissa is out of town filming the second season of the German tv show The Zweiflers.
Edwin adds a Latin flair so you can expect to hear hits like Slim Gaillard’s Mishugana Mambo and Mickey Katz’s Yiddishe Mambo. Cilla brings the fun with the bawdy Pizza, and Dinah Washington’s suggestive TV is the Thing This Year. Shapiro channels Allan Sherman’s parody of Cole Porter’s You’re the Top and blows sax on his barn burner version of Fiddler on the Roof’s To Life retitled Barroom Mitzvah. The rhythm section cooks like crazy.
Paul Shapiro’s Ribs & Brisket has been performing internationally since the release of Essen (Eat in Yiddish) on Tzadik Records. Their feet are firmly planted where the Borscht Belt meets 52nd Street, cooking up a roux of jazz, blues, Latin and Yiddish. Eclectic, humorous and virtuosic, the ensemble swings hard and the singers rock the mic.
The boundary between classic rhythm and blues and jazz was once porous territory, and this joyful ensemble, led by the exuberant saxophonist Shapiro, is always willing to do the time warp to revive that openhearted embrace of genres, even mixing in Jewish musical themes as well. The New Yorker
Reedist-vocalist Paul Shapiro stirs klezmer, swing, R&B and other hearty sounds into his Ribs and Brisket Revue, seasoning it all with a potent Yiddish tinge. Time Out New York

As the name suggests, the saxophonist Paul Shapiro’s Ribs and Brisket Revue takes Jewish-themed music through a few twists and turns, delivering joyous sounds that find room in the mix for R. & B., jazz, and assorted off-beat strains. The New Yorker Hard blowing, finger-snapping, klezmer-inflected jazz and wailing big city blues that suddenly slips into Yiddish. Straight No Chaser UK
The band plays like a juke joint combo used to dodging beer bottles and bullets. Shapiro's nasty tenor sax breaks would have qualified him for duty at Duffy's Gaieties on Cahuenga Boulevard, when Lenny Bruce emceed for the peelers in the '50s. Kirk Silsbee
Cilla Owens As smooth as Nancy Wilson, as authoritative as Sarah Vaughan, and as informed as Carmen McRae writes Jazztimes reviewing her album ‘Tis What It Is. Cilla was a long-time member of Louvinia Pointer’s The Great Day Chorale, dedicated to the preservation of the Negro Spiritual. In 2015 she was a Katowitz-Radin Artist in Residence for the Brooklyn Public Library where she presented Lebendig in Brooklyn, a tribute to Yiddish Theater beyond Second Avenue. She directs the Adelphi University Jazz Ensemble, the Hunter Jazz Vocal Workshop, and teaches voice at both campuses.
