Ten years after their last run, the alter ego of punk heroes The Bronx returns to the stage in full charro suits, trading distortion for trumpet and violin without losing an ounce of the intensity. Eight musicians deep, the band treats mariachi and punk as the same instinct wearing different clothes, both rooted in working class storytelling, both built to move a room. Expect galloping rhythms, hallucinogenic violin lines, and a horn section that hits like a gut punch, pulled from a catalog that's carried the band from Coachella to Letterman's stage.
New material from Mariachi El Bronx IV threads through the set, songs written in the space between grief and getting married, between wildfire and wedding vows. Live, that tension turns into something closer to catharsis, a set that swings from hard-won hope to full-throated celebration and back again.
It's a rare kind of night at City Winery, one part fiesta, one part rock show, best experienced with a glass of something bold in hand and a seat close enough to feel the trumpets. Ten years away hasn't dulled the edge. If anything, it's sharper.
