This remarkable journey began in 1960 with Joseph Shabalala, a young farm boy in apartheid era South Africa who dared to imagine something greater. From that impossible dream came Ladysmith Black Mambazo, a group that would rise to become one of the most influential vocal ensembles in the world. Through decades of social upheaval, their music offered messages of peace, unity, and resilience, becoming a cultural lifeline both at home and abroad.
Singing in the traditional isicathamiya style developed by South African mine workers, Ladysmith Black Mambazo blends intricate harmonies with spiritual depth and emotional power. Their global impact includes five GRAMMY Awards, nineteen nominations, and historic collaborations that helped introduce World Music to mainstream audiences. Nelson Mandela himself called them South Africa’s Cultural Ambassadors to the World and credited their songs as a source of strength during his imprisonment.
