L.A. Young brings Hyman’s music to life with a rare contralto voice that captures the low, rich, dark-toned quality that made Hyman’s sound so distinctive. Rather than an impersonation, Young delivers the songs in the vocal range they were written for, backed by her working band, Soul Society™. Every arrangement is performed live, with nothing on tape.
After three consecutive years of City Winery performances and three sold-out nights at Washington, D.C.’s Anacostia Playhouse, L.A. Young is taking this acclaimed tribute to audiences beyond the capital. She has also shared the stage at the Jazz Legacy Foundation Gala with some of the nation’s leading jazz and soul performers and was a three-category nominee at the 2018 Maryland Music Awards.
Designed for the listening room, this theatrical and reverent celebration honors the music, artistry, and legacy of Phyllis Hyman through a powerful live performance. As WPKN 89.5 FM host Tony “Doc” Hardy wrote, Young “made you believe, for just one night, that the Queen was alive and among us.”
