Jonathan Suazo is an award-winning Puerto Rican saxophonist, composer, and educator whose work bridges Afro-Caribbean traditions and contemporary jazz through a powerful cross-cultural lens. Grounded in heritage and driven by emotional storytelling, Suazo uses music as a vehicle to share the rhythms, histories, and lived experiences of the Caribbean within a modern jazz framework.

In 2023, Jonathan was named one of the Top Ten Emerging Jazz Artists by the GRAMMYs, marking a major milestone in his career. That same year, his debut album Ricano (Ropeadope Records) was recognized by The New York Times as one of the Best Jazz Albums of 2023, further establishing him as a distinctive and important new voice in the genre. His latest album Ricano Vol. 2 (2026) received an excellent 4 star review from Downbeat.

A graduate of the Berklee Global Jazz Institute (Master of Music), Suazo has received numerous honors and national recognitions for both artistic excellence and community impact. These include the 2024 Chamber Music America New Jazz Works Grant, the WBUR Makers Series Award for creating meaningful cultural impact within the Boston community, the South Arts Jazz Road Tours Grant (Winter 2023), and the Berklee Urban Service Award for his efforts to raise awareness and provide humanitarian support for Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria. In addition to receiving grants, Jonathan has also contributed to the field by serving as a grant reviewer for organizations such as New Music USA and Mid Atlantic Arts, helping shape opportunities for the next generation of artists.

Critics have praised Suazo’s work for its emotional depth and musical sophistication. Catalina Maria Johnson of DownBeat Magazine describes his sound as “a soundscape propelled by lyrical sax playing,” while Giovanni Russonello of The New York Times characterizes his music as “richly built, written from the heart and packed with complexity, always seeking the next level of altitude.”

Jonathan’s performance and collaboration credits reflect his versatility and deep connection to both the jazz and Latin music worlds. He has shared the stage and studio with artists such as Miguel Zenón, Terri Lyne Carrington, David Sánchez, Benito González, Zaccai Curtis, Charlie Sepúlveda, Gonzalo Grau, Danilo Pérez, Ricky Rodriguez, Ileana Cabra (iLÉ), Calma Carmona, Rakalam Bob Moses, Joe Lovano, Paoli Mejías, Humberto Ramírez, David Rivera, Tito Matos, Ricardo Pons, William Cepeda, Jon Secada, Pedro Capó, Obie Bermúdez, Hans Glawischnig, Silverio Pérez, and Tony Escapa, among many others.

As an active performer and educator, Suazo continues to shape a body of work defined by emotional depth, cultural integrity, and a forward-looking vision for jazz as a living, evolving art form.
