Joe Pug & Willie Watson come to City Winery Hudson Valley on Thursday, October 22, for an evening rooted in the best of American folk and roots music.Joe Pug's path is the kind that makes for good songs: dropped out of college, picked up a carpenter's trade in Chicago, and started writing. Since 2008, he has released a string of critically acclaimed records on Lightning Rod Records, a label whose alumni include Jason Isbell, Billy Joe Shaver, and James McMurtry. Paste Magazine placed him in company with Dylan, Waits, Ritter, and Prine. He has earned stages at Newport Folk Festival, Lollapalooza, and Bonnaroo, and tour slots alongside Steve Earle, Levon Helm, and Sturgill Simpson. His podcast, The Working Songwriter, is required listening for anyone who cares about the art of the song.Willie Watson grew up in the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York, went on to help found Old Crow Medicine Show, and spent years mining the American folk canon in collaboration with David Rawlings and Gillian Welch. His self-titled debut is the record he's been working toward: nine original songs drawn from a life of heartbreak, excess, recovery, and reckoning, delivered in a rural tenor of real beauty.
