City Winery Boston presents Joe Pug and Willie Watson live on October 19th at 7:30pm.

Joe Pug & Willie Watson bring one of the most compelling double bills in American folk and roots music to City Winery Boston on Monday, October 19. Two voices, two very different origin stories, and a shared belief that a song should mean something.

Joe Pug came up the hard way: a college dropout who traded a classroom for a carpenter's bench in Chicago, writing songs after shifts until the city's music scene took notice. What emerged was a body of work that Paste Magazine compared, without reservation, to Dylan, Waits, Ritter, and Prine. That kind of praise is earned through lyrical specificity and a plaintive harmonica style that cuts through a room. Pug has since toured with Steve Earle, Levon Helm, and Sturgill Simpson, and appeared at Newport Folk, Lollapalooza, and Bonnaroo. He is also the creator and host of The Working Songwriter, a podcast beloved by anyone who cares about how songs get made.

Willie Watson's story begins in the Finger Lakes of upstate New York, winds through the founding years of Old Crow Medicine Show, and arrives somewhere far more personal: his self-titled debut album, the first record he's made entirely of his own songs. After years of interpreting the American folk canon alongside David Rawlings and Gillian Welch, Watson finally had something to say in his own words. The result is nine songs about heartbreak, hard living, sobriety, and the kind of growth that only comes from facing yourself honestly. His rural tenor has never sounded more at home.

Together on the intimate stage at City Winery, with wine service and chef-driven dining woven into the evening, this is the kind of night folk music was made for. Doors open at 6:00 PM.
