Forty-five years ago, a small Greenwich Village club called the Speak Easy became the beating heart of a new generation of New York singer-songwriters. Out of that intimate room grew the legendary Fast Folk compilations—launching and documenting artists who would go on to shape contemporary folk and Americana. The Fast Folk Musical Magazine collection is now part of the Smithsonian Folkways Recordings family of labels.
On April 11, City Winery hosts a special evening celebrating that remarkable musical community. Featuring Fast Folk alumni Suzanne Vega, David Massengill, Erik Frandsen, and Brian Rose, alongside Speak Easy’s Angela Page and Miranda Hardy (daughter of Fast Folk founder Jack Hardy), the night will blend songs, stories, and memories from one of the most fertile scenes in Village history.
Hosted by Rolling Stone contributor and author David Browne ("Talkin’ Greenwich Village") and introduced by musician and cultural curator Fabio Fantuzzi, this is more than a concert—it’s a reunion, a tribute, and a living chapter of New York’s music history.
