Three decades in, Boney James still sounds like a man discovering something new. The saxophonist, composer and producer built his catalog on deep groove and melodic instinct, and on his twentieth studio album, he strips the music down to its essence.
A Simple Man reflects that clarity. GRAMMY winning vocalist Ledisi joins him on the contemporary R&B duet "I Belong To You," trumpeter Marquis Hill appears on "Morocco," and guitarist Larry Carlton lends his touch to the Steely Dan inflected "Storybook." James also reworks Ellington's "In a Sentimental Mood" over a D'Angelo indebted groove.
His R&B roots run deep. Before his 1992 debut, Trust, he toured with Morris Day, The Isley Brothers and Teena Marie, learning the pocket that still defines his playing today.
