Rufus Wainwright is widely celebrated as one of the most distinctive singer songwriters and composers of his generation. Praised by The New York Times for his “genuine originality,” the New York born, Montreal raised artist has built a remarkable career that spans pop, opera, theater, and orchestral composition.
Across more than ten studio albums, multiple live recordings, and a GRAMMY nominated concert film, Wainwright has continually expanded the boundaries of contemporary songwriting. His acclaimed release Unfollow the Rules marked a powerful return to original music, while Folkocracy explored his family’s folk roots through collaborations with artists including Chaka Khan, Brandi Carlile, John Legend, and Anohni. His recent live recording I’m a Stranger Here Myself: Wainwright Does Weill further showcases his deep appreciation for classic songcraft.
Beyond his work as a recording artist, Wainwright has composed operas, written music for film and television, and created ambitious large scale works such as Dream Requiem, which premiered in 2024 with narration by Meryl Streep.
