Daniel Lanois doesn't so much play a room as reshape it. For over four decades, the seven time GRAMMY winner has been one of music's most restless architects of sound, the producer behind U2's Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby, Bob Dylan's Time Out of Mind, and Emmylou Harris's Wrecking Ball, records that didn't just define careers but redrew the boundaries of what popular music could sound like. Rolling Stone called him the most important producer to emerge in the 80s. Spend one evening in his presence and it's easy to hear why.
Lanois' new single, "Grace," a hushed reimagining of "Amazing Grace" featuring Aaron Neville's voice and Brian Blade's drumming, is a fitting introduction to where he is now: still questing, still finding new textures in familiar hymns. His catalog spans Acadie, Shine, Belladonna, and Flesh and Machine, work that moves between ambient atmosphere and roots soul with the same studio instincts he brought to Dune, Sling Blade, and Red Dead Redemption II.
