Ami Taf Ra brings her genre spanning sound to City Winery St. Louis this November, joined by acclaimed saxophonist, composer, and producer Kamasi Washington for a tour presentation built around her debut album, The Prophet and the Madman. Produced by Washington and released through Brainfeeder, the record weaves Moroccan Gnawa and Arabic musical tradition together with gospel, soul, and spiritual jazz, drawing on Kahlil Gibran's writing to explore duality and ancestral memory. Ami's voice moves fluidly between intimacy and theatrical release.
Their collaboration is felt throughout, most directly on "How I Became a Madman," a soaring track built on Washington's production and Ami's singular cross cultural point of view. The result bridges North African and Middle Eastern tradition with the improvisational spirit of modern jazz, sounding both ancestral and entirely new.
Ami has performed internationally across Europe, North Africa, the Middle East, and the United States, with stops including the Dutch Royal Metropole Orchestra, the Hollywood Bowl Jazz Festival, and City Winery Boston. Kamasi Washington, a Grammy winner and Emmy nominee, continues to build a body of work that spans jazz, soul, hip hop, classical music, and screen.
